Short history of Novi Sad Chess Club

Novi Sad Chess Club was founded on 12 February 1922. Jovan Rajkovic, the first president of the club, Zarko Ognjanovic, a well known journalist a humorist, and Bosko Mesterovic, initiated its foundation. Throughout its rich history the club has represented this town and has popularized the ancient game in the best manner. It has organized countless first-class chess competitions and has always had a very capable, respectable competing team . Numerous distinguished players have taken part in it :Steva Ciric, Mirko Breder, Nikolai Kulzinski, Milutin Rajkovic, Bora Tot, Milunka Lazarevic, Rudolf Maric, Ljubica Zivkovic, Anton Deze, Ivan Buljovcic, Tomislav Rakic and many others.

The present generation, headed by Petar Popovic, Miroljub Lazic, Dragan Solak, Vladislav Nevedinci, Zlatko Ilincic, Aleksandaar Kovacevic and others, has reached the very top of Yugoslav team chess. The most significant successes of the club include: Winning the Yugoslav Cup (2001 and 2002), winning the Yugoslav Cup for women (1979) Sharing the first place in Team Championship of Yugoslavia in 1934 (the final match was never played) and vice champion titles in the same competition (1926,1937,1939,1947,2000) and winning in the Yugoslav Youth Team championship (1991) etc.

The fact that NSCC has always been among the clubs with the biggest membership and has organized numerous competitions goes to show how very well organized it is. The following competitions are the most important: seven senior championships (1936, 1945, 1955, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995) eleven October grand master tournaments (from 1972 to 1985) a dozen international tournaments of different difficulty, for both women and men, etc. The club also contributed, directly and through its members, to the excellent organization of the Chess Olympic Games in Novi Sad in 1990. Among the club members the title of Yugoslav champion was won by Lazic (1992), Popovic (1995), Ilincic (1994 and 2000) and Kovacevic (2001) In women competition that was Ljubica Zivkovic (1959 and) in youth competition Popovic (1975 and 1976) Solak (1995) and Benkovic (1999). Solak, Benkovic, Vuk Savanovic and Boban Bogosavljevic have also won a few cadet titles.

It is worth mentioning that the honorary membership of NSCC has been accepted by such distinguished chess players as world champions Alexander Aljehin,Mihail Talj and Maja Ciburdanidze, well known grandmasters BoraKostic, Geza Maroci, Svetozar Gligoric and Milunka Lazarevic and the ex-president of FIDA-Florensio Kampomanes. There are now three new honorary members: grandmaster Borislav Ivkov, grandmaster Matanovic Aleksandar and grandmaster Ljubomir Ljubojevic. For the club `s success during eight decades of existence numerous chess workers are responsible. Besides its founders, those are: Radoslav Iljic, PhD, Zarko Popovic, Dragoljub Gvozdenac, Maksim Nerandzic, Veljko Komlenovic, Dusan Marjan, Zoran Stojanovic, PhD, Vojislav Petrovic, PhD, Milenko Jovanovic, PhD, etc and also the present management with Milorad Lazic, Stanko Jovic and Krasoje Notaros in the head.
